Lombard, IL -

Women will get a chance to peek under the hood and underneath the body of a car at a special car care clinic being held in Lombard.

Jeff Woodall, owner of CK Auto Repair,  21W079 Roosevelt Road, said there’s a lot of demand for the clinic he’ll offer Saturday, Nov. 3.

“We have an open shop,” Woodall said. “We’ll bring people back and explain things to them. A lot of the people who come to us are women. It seemed like they wanted to know more.”

So last year, Woodall offered his first women’s car care clinic. Thirty women attended, and there was a waiting list for any cancellations, he said.

“We thought we’d run from 9 to 10:30,” he said. “We were terrified everybody would be bored after an hour and a half.”

Instead, when 10:30 a.m. rolled around, he and his employees had only covered a fraction of what they planned to go over — and their audience was listening eagerly.

“They stayed until noon,” he said.

This year, the free clinic is being split into two sections: underneath the vehicle from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and under the hood from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants are welcome to sign up for both sections. Woodall said his shop can only fit about 30 people; so far, almost half of the spots are filled.

“We frequently see women who seem intimidated by car repair,” said his wife, Kelly Woodall. “It’s an opportunity to teach them what they need to know about their (vehicle’s) care.”

The first session will include how to change a tire, steering and suspension components, and brakes. The second session will cover how to check fluids, where things are located, how to jump-start and some of the engine components, Jeff Woodall said.

One topic that will be addressed in both sessions is “techno-speak,” the technical terms used by people in the industry.

“They feel they should know, and they’re afraid to ask about it,” Woodall said. “We hope to clarify that.”

For example, if a woman is told she needs her brake calipers repaired, the clinic will prepare her to ask questions about that.

“There are several things that can be involved in a brake job,” he said. “We can explain the different components.”

One thing women will learn in the clinic is that brake caliper replacement isn’t frequently needed.

“They should ask ‘Why?’” he said, “The best thing is to ask them to show (the part) to you.”

Kelly Woodall said she once was a little anxious about car repair, but what she’s learned in her husband’s shop has given her confidence.

“Men are thought to know more about automotives in general,” she said. “For women, it’s a lack of information, maybe. This gives them the information they need.”
