Editor’s note: This is an updated version of a column that appears in today’s newspaper. It includes information from an interview Tuesday afternoon with Berwyn Mayor Michael O’Connor. Unfortunately, that interview took place after the newspaper went to press.

Giving away 150 backpacks filled with school supplies was not enough to satisfy a church’s desire to help young students in north Berwyn. So pastors are planning to budget for at least 250 next year.

Promising an “upscale” look, a new convenience and liquor store is slated to open at Ridgeland and Ogden in Berwyn this fall — the same location where another business was shut down in January.

Would-be customers heading to the Egg Store Produce Market in Cermak Plaza  Thursday morning were greeted with window signs stating: “Familia Foods,” “Carniceria Y Frutera” and “Opening soon.”
